Ants Won't Ruin Our Picnic Anymore

As I watched my two year old triumphantly shouting “got it” as he crushed an ant, I could not help but think about when I was eleven or twelve years old.  One of my friends would squash ants and it would really upset me.  I mean, seriously upset me to the point where I made her hold funerals for all of the ants that she purposely killed.  Together, we would sweep up the remnants of the ants and place them in a little box and then we would each take turns to say nice things about them and I would make her apologize to them for taking their lives.

Life was so much simpler then and I seriously thought that the worst of my problems was that I had a friend who was an ant killer.  Fast forward nearly thirty years (yes, I am nearly forty), and I have just searched “natural ant killers and repellents.”  Does this mean that I have become my own worst problem?  Thirty years ago, I would have thought so. I would have been mortified at the person that I have become.  Today, however, I am sick of sharing my kitchen and the rest of my home with these little pests.  Of course, I am going to try the repellent route first and maybe I can gently direct the ones who have taken up residence in our house to go outside.  If they decide that they will not leave their new home, I will let my two year old have some fun and this time, there will not be any ant funerals taking place.

Do you have any any natural remedies to deter ants that have been proven to work? Please let me know! I will update this post once I test some of the ones that I have found.
